For a lot of people, getting toothpaste simply involves going to the grocery store or pharmacy and taking it off the shelf.

However, there are a lot of people who prefer to take a different route (whether to save more or because they believe that it is healthier) and that is making their own, homemade toothpaste.

As someone who is conscious about oral hygiene, however, you may wonder if there really is any benefit to making your own toothpaste in the first place.

What Goes Into Homemade Toothpaste?

One of the most effective ingredients when it comes to oral hygiene is coconut oil. This is because of the biocidal properties that coconut oil has on the common type of bacteria, Streptococcus, which is normally found in the mouth. Other ingredients can include bentonite clay, which naturally polishes the teeth.

Xylitol can also be used as it effectively combats the bacteria in the mouth that tend to cause cavities. When making homemade toothpaste, a lot of people will leave out anything acidic, which can only do more harm than good. Baking soda is another common ingredient due to its alkaline properties, which can fight against acid.

The Benefits of Making Homemade Toothpaste

Making homemade toothpaste means that you know exactly what you are putting on your teeth. While it can take a bit of time and thought, it can give people a better feeling of control when it comes to their oral hygiene.

For the most part, it also means that there are fewer harmful chemicals such as glycerine, which doesn't cause harm, but is a soap and doesn't belong in the mouth.
