Dental Contouring and Reshaping Portland, OR

Portland, OR woman smiling from new dental contouring. Here at Hunter Dental Care, we know that most of our patients have relatively limited experience or knowledge when it comes to some of the more specific dental procedures. When it comes to fillings or root canals, most of our patients have at least a basic knowledge of what to expect, even if they do not know the details. However, some of the more specific procedures that are not always used can be slightly intimidating. For example, many people have not heard of dental contouring. However, we want you as comfortable as possible when you step into our office for your procedure, so we are more than happy to give you as much information as you desire.

What does dental contouring mean?

Dental contouring goes by several names. If you have heard of crown-lengthening, crown-extension, or crown-elongation, you have heard of a way of dental contouring. Cosmetic or restorative dentistry sometimes calls for the use of dental crowns to replace missing teeth. Whether your tooth was extracted or lost from an injury or age, the gap needs to be filled as soon as possible. However, crowns are not uniquely used for this purpose. Sometimes, you retain the injured tooth and still need a crown.

Cases where the cavity is deep and extends significantly below the gumline, a crown can be needed to reinforce the tooth and keep it strong enough for use without further damage. To make a crown, though, you need a certain amount of tooth above the gumline for it to be strong and safe. In some circumstances, the tooth that needs the crown must be lengthened for it to fit properly and safely. This means having more tooth exposed above the gumline and a neatly shaped gumline as well.

How does it work?

When you come in to solve a problem such as a deep cavity, crack, fracture, or other significant problem, our dentists will decide if a crown is right for you. If it is, this will allow you to retain your tooth and its integrity rather than having to undergo an extraction. This option is great because it offers you a long-lasting solution and a cosmetically appealing end-result. However, if your tooth is too short and you need your tooth contoured, we will start by numbing the area and the area surrounding the tooth or teeth that need lengthening.

Then our dentists will focus on the gums and teeth themselves. We will remove and reshape the gums and the bone of your teeth to leave more exposed and a surface to which we can properly bond the crown. After the crown is placed, it is essential that you brush and floss, taking care of your new crown in much the same way as you would your natural teeth.

Hunter Dental Care knows that procedures can be very stressful to some, but we assure you that you are in great hands. We have years of experience making us very knowledgeable and skilled practitioners, and you will be safe and comfortable in our office.
