Diagram of dental crowns by dentist in Portland, OR.A dental crown can restore a tooth after it has been damaged or weakened. Our staff at Hunter Dental Care understands how important it is to have functioning teeth, and we can help restore a broken tooth, a compromised tooth, or even a missing tooth. Dr. Hunter can meet with you and design a treatment plan that will fit your needs, this may include a dental implant, a mini dental implant, and one of the several dental appliances.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a protective cap or cover for a tooth that has been compromised. Dr. Hunter will tell you that it is always best for your oral health to try and save an original tooth structure. When a tooth has been damaged, the best way to protect it, and extend its life is to cover it with a protective layer like a dental crown.

Dental crowns are precisely shaped to fit the shape, size, and dentition of your tooth. Your crown is designed to fit comfortably in your mouth. We want your crown to feel as natural to you as your natural tooth.

Dental crowns are available in a variety of materials, each with their pros and cons, based on your individual needs. Dental crowns come in:

•  Gold Dental Crowns:The material gold is an excellent choice for a dental crown when considering texture and feel. This material most resembles your natural tooth in feel, so patients are often happiest with gold crowns for chewing. The downside is, of course, the coloring. A deep yellow color, gold crowns are noticeable in your mouth, so we only recommend them for back molars, where they are most hidden.
•  Porcelain Over Metal Dental Crowns:Metal makes for a strong dental crown. It should be long lasting and not fracture. To cover the dark color, there is a baked on layer of porcelain. The porcelain helps the crown blend in with your natural tooth coloring but is subject to chipping. This is a great option for a strong, durable crown. The downside is that some patients find the hardness of the metal to be too hard, and uncomfortable when chewing, and also that dark spots can appear if the porcelain chips.
•  All Porcelain Dental Crowns:This option is often the first choice of dental crowns for most patients. The texture feels quite similar to the natural tooth, and the coloring is precise. An all porcelain dental crown will perfectly blend in your mouth. The downside to this type of crown is that though it is durable, it is subject to fracture and breakage.
•  Ceramic Dental Crowns:Rapidly increasing in popularity, ceramic crowns are a strong option, they are known for their durability and color matching. The downside is that ceramic crowns have been noted for feeling hard in the mouth of the patient, making them slightly uncomfortable.

Dental crowns are used for single tooth restorations and multiple tooth restorations. We can tailor your dental treatment for your needs. In some situations, this may include first surgically placing a dental implant, or a mini dental implant, when a tooth has been lost. We can restore your tooth, even when the original tooth is no longer present.
