The gag reflex is infamous. Most people have it, causing them to gag when an implement goes a little too far into the oral cavity. This is a natural defense mechanism in order to protect against choking.
Of course, people have varying levels of sensitivity to objects that enter their mouth and some people are much better able to control their gag reflex than others.
However, a lot of patients may be wondering how it will impact their dental visits when they come to us.
Having a Strong Gag Reflex and How It Can Impact Your Dental Visits
For patients who have a strong gag reflex, dental visits can be a bit of a pain. This is not particularly fun for us, either as it makes our job a little more challenging.
It is something that we always keep in mind when someone comes to see us. A strong gag reflex will affect almost all aspects of a dental procedure, including X-rays, teeth cleaning and inspecting the teeth.
Probably one of the biggest aspects to be affected by this reflex is inspection of and dental work on the molars, which lie at the back of the mouth.
Can The Gag Reflex Be Overcome?
The good news is that yes, a gag reflex can be overcome. Patients with particularly severe gag reflexes will have to do a bit of work on it themselves. The reflex can be minimized if you allow your palate to get used to being touched.
Of course, you can always come and speak to us before your next visit if this is a big problem for you. We will be more than happy to advise and provide techniques that will ensure we get your dental work done regardless of reflex.
