The Discovery of Seaweed as a Cavity FighterThe discovery of seaweed as a cavity fighter happened by accident. Researchers were looking for a way to attack and remove bacteria from ship hulls. After several trials and errors, researchers found that a natural bacteria found on the top of seaweed is a great oral bacteria fighter. It does not seem to matter what which type of seaweed is used, the bacteria is present. There are several ways that the bacteria could be used to fight cavities. A healthy diet that includes seaweed gives you vitamin A and vitamin D, both of which are important for your oral health. Seaweed is also loaded with iodine, iron, calcium, vitamin C and magnesium. Researchers are also looking at whether toothpaste could include seaweed as part of the ingredients. One of the problems with toothpaste is that it cannot reach the areas in between teeth well. Many researchers think that the seaweed-infused toothpaste might be able to protect teeth more effectively, especially in the spaces in between teeth. Believe it or not, seaweed is also being studied for its anti-inflammatory properties as well, which could fight gum disease. Chewing seaweed is also good for teeth whitening. With all of the benefits seaweed brings, it's crazy not to add a little to your diet. While chewing seaweed may not be your thing, you can always eat seaweed wrapped in sushi.
