Dental Conditions That Can Form Due to Stress

Dental Conditions That Can Form Due to StressStress can trigger and aggravate physical illness in our bodies. Chronic headaches, muscle tension, and an upset stomach can be a result of stress. Similarly, our oral health can be compromised when we are under high levels of stress over long periods of time. We all must live with a certain level of stress; however, we advise patients to be proactive and prioritize enjoyment and relaxation into their lives on a regular basis to counteract the effects of stress. Every day, we see patients who do not have positive ways of coping with stress, and their oral health suffers because of it.

Some Dental Conditions Associated with Stress

Bruxism is a condition where a person grinds their teeth. This is different from chewing. If a person has bruxism, they grind or clench their teeth back and forth without food in their mouth. Often, a person does not know they're doing it. Many people with bruxism grind their teeth unconsciously in their sleep. It is thought that bruxism is a result of stress. People with bruxism often have discomfort in their face, headaches, and jaw problems.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMJ, can also be a dental condition associated with stress. This disorder affects the jaw and can be a result of bruxism. Tenderness in the jaw or at the joints in the jaw or difficulty chewing could be a symptom of TMJ. If you have discomfort that persists in your jaw, please call our office to make an appointment and assess your situation.
