Most people think that bleeding gums while brushing or flossing their teeth is normal. However, it can be a sign of an underlying disease, and when in doubt, the best thing is to schedule an appointment and make sure everything is alright.
Still, some factors can exacerbate bleeding gums, and they do not necessarily mean a serious issue. Some of these include pregnancy, plaque and tartar build-up, and even brushing your teeth too harshly. If it is the first time you see bleeding from your gums, there are several ways to stop the bleeding while you get to our offices.
Keep Your Mouth Clean
This step is more of a prevention tip, but it can be helpful the next time you have bleeding gums. One of the most common reasons someone could have bleeding gums is poor dental hygiene. At the same time, poor dental hygiene can be a conditioning factor to plaque build-up. Besides brushing two times a day and flossing right after, our dentists will recommend that you visit our offices at least two times a year.
You Can Use Ice
Ice is a famous ally since almost everyone has ice cubes at their home. Ice cubes, or a small pack of ice, will help swollen gums and stop the bleeding. They can also help to relieve any pain you might have in that area.
You Can Also Use Warm Salt
Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water helps to lessen bacteria growth. Besides, salt has healing properties that can help you if the reason behind your bleeding gums is a cut. You can make your saltwater by adding salt, specifically half a teaspoon, to eight ounces of water. Schedule a consultative appointment with us for more information on bleeding gums and possible treatments.
