Answers To Common Questions About Sleep Apnea

Answers To Common Questions About Sleep ApneaMillions of Americans suffer from sleep apnea, many of whom remain undiagnosed. This condition is serious and needs proper attention. Here we look at some of the most asked questions regarding sleep apnea.

What is Sleep Apnea?

It is a disorder whereby breathing stops and resumes repeatedly during the night. The condition is common in men. Other people at risk of the disorder are older individuals, and obese men and women. If left untreated, sleep apnea can be dangerous. It is not uncommon for people with the disorder to snore and feel exhausted after a full night's sleep. Different kinds of sleep apnea exist and they are obstructive, complex, and central sleep apnea.

How is it Treated?

Various treatments for sleep apnea are available. In some cases, just making lifestyle changes can help, for example, losing weight and doing away with smoking. A CPAP device is one of the most common modes of treatment. This machine, often known as a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine is worn at night. The pressures it releases on airways help open up the air passage, allowing patients to breathe easier.

A dental appliance resembling a mouthguard is another treatment option. This device repositions the tongue and jaw so that a patient is able to breathe easier when sleeping. Sometimes, surgery may be performed.

Who is at Risk for Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea can affect anyone. People with higher chances of developing the disorder are men, the elderly, heavy smokers, and obese or overweight persons. Individuals who display a sedentary lifestyle are also at risk and so are people with an overbite. Also, people with abnormally large necks are likely to develop this disorder.
